Okay, in the process of posting this (http://www.cgidir.com/news/news/060403WhiteCamel.html) news item I found out that the Perl community is working very hard to preserve its unique identity. They give out community awards; they single-mindedly popularize the camel logo the same way linux uses the penguin; some of them devote much time to writing Perl poetry (http://www.perlmonks.org/index.pl?node=Perl%20Poetry) and JAPHs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_another_Perl_hacker); witty comments from Perl's creator Larry Wall are often found on many internet sites, etc. On the development front, the all new Perl 6 is under heavy construction, while Perl 5 is still used by many top-notch programmers.
In the same time, many people say that Perl is a marginal programming language when compared to, say, .NET and Java. Now Ruby on Rails gets much attention.
Some people love it, some people hate it (I love this one: "Perl [looks] like a cartoon character swearing."). What do you think of Perl? Do you use it? Do you intend to? How much attention should CGIDir (http://www.cgidir.com) devote to Perl, and how much to other scripting languages?
