I've always read (and it makes sense to believe) that search engine traffic is the best kind of traffic because it's very targetted--people are actively looking for what your site contains (usually).
But one of my sites in particular gets a lot of traffic from a link that's on another site with a similar theme. Would that traffic be just as good as the search engine traffic? What do you think?

Traffic is traffic, as they say... but you have to ask yourself what kind of traffic you want. If you're looking for just hits, then it probably doesn't matter as much who's coming to your site. Eventually though, you'll want the people coming there to be coming there for a good reason, not just by accident or redirection.
I think search engine traffic is just as good as backlinked traffic, but in this specific case it may be about the same. Or not. You mentioned it has a similar theme - maybe they're seeing what that site's competitors look like? Are the visitors converting, or are they just surfing a page and then leaving?
To sum it up, I think that question can only be answered on a case-by-case basis. Of course, I could be completely wrong, because it's Monday morning and I'm running on 4 hours of sleep. :D
